10 Reasons Why I’d Choose a Destination Wedding
Looking back on my wedding, there are so many aspects I loved, from our beautiful church ceremony to the incredible live band we had in the evening. But if I could do it all over again, one thing I’d change is opting for a destination wedding. Here’s why I’ve come to love the idea of a wedding away from home—and why it might be the perfect choice for you too.
1. A More Relaxed Atmosphere
One of the biggest appeals of a destination wedding is the sense of escape it provides. You and your guests are essentially on holiday, which creates a relaxed, celebratory mood from the moment everyone arrives. Instead of rushing to fit everything into a single day, a destination wedding allows you to stretch the experience across a weekend (or even longer), filled with lots of lovely moments and memories.
2. Convenience of Everything in One Place
One of my regrets about our wedding day was the distance between the church and the reception venue. After such a magical ceremony, the logistics of moving everyone - including families with kids - disrupted the flow of the day. It felt like an anticlimactic to get into a car and drive off, followed by a 15-minute wait for everyone to arrive.
A destination wedding, often held at venues where everything happens on-site, eliminates this issue. Imagine exchanging vows in a stunning outdoor setting and then seamlessly transitioning to cocktails, dinner, and dancing - all without needing to leave the venue.
3. Endless Choices for Venues
Planning a wedding near home can sometimes feel restrictive when it comes to venue options. In our case, Grantchester Meadows in Cambridge, the dreamy festival-style location we initially hoped for, had too many limitations, and we had to compromise. A destination wedding, especially in a location like Cornwall, opens up a world of possibilities. From breathtaking beaches to charming countryside estates, there’s a venue to suit every style, budget and vision. Take a look at our curated collection of venues here.
4. A Built-In Mini Holiday
Destination weddings feel like a mini holiday for you and your guests. You’re not just celebrating for a single day; you’re creating an entire experience. From pre-wedding gatherings to post-wedding brunches, there’s time to truly connect with loved ones and soak up the magic of your chosen destination.
Even the morning of your wedding becomes special - you can spend it in a beautiful, relaxed environment, getting ready with your closest friends and family.
5. A More Intimate Guest List
Another reason I’d choose a destination wedding is the chance to pare down the guest list. Our wedding had a larger guest count than I would have liked, which made it harder to spend quality time with everyone. Though as a caveat, my husband would have had more guests!
If a smaller, more intimate celebration is what you imagine, a destination wedding naturally lends itself to this. It’s easier to explain to guests that you’re keeping things small because of the location. Plus, you can always host a bigger celebration at home afterwards to include everyone who couldn’t make the trip.
6. A Unique Experience for Everyone
A destination wedding is more than just an event; it’s an experience. Whether it’s the thrill of exploring a new place, trying local food, or enjoying activities like coastal walks or beach BBQs, it offers something truly unique for your guests. These shared adventures become part of your wedding story, making it all the more memorable.
7. Time to Personalise the Space
One of the challenges of a single-day wedding is the limited time to prepare and personalise your venue. With a destination wedding, you often have the chance to settle in a day or two early, allowing you to make the space feel truly yours.
You can work with your suppliers on-site and add those personal touches that make the day extra special. Many venues listed on Wedding Venues in Cornwall, for example, offer 2- or 3-night stays as part of their wedding packages, giving you the time to create the perfect setting for your celebration. 10. Less Stress, More Joy
It might seem counterintuitive, but destination weddings can actually reduce stress. Many venues offer packages that include everything from catering to coordination, making the planning process simpler. Plus, the destination setting naturally encourages a more relaxed, laid-back vibe, helping you let go of perfectionism and focus on what truly matters: celebrating your love.

A destination wedding ticks so many boxes: it’s relaxed, memorable, and filled with opportunities to create once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
